These appliances are used in cases of premature tooth loss, preserving the space of extracted primary teeth so that the permanent teeth that emerge can erupt into their correct positions. Premature extraction or premature loss of primary teeth, for any reason, will cause the adjacent teeth to move into the space. Space-maintaining appliances prevent crowding, chewing, and speech disorders.
